Booklovers Club

The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA was established by a Booklovers Club on May 5, 1905. It was the first Young Women’s Christian Association in Washington DC whose mission was to provide care and housing to the hundreds of “colored” women and girls flocking to the city to seeking employment.  We continue the Booklovers Club to honor the brave women who created the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA.

The Booklovers Club meets once a month, at 2:00pm at the PWYWCA in the multi-purpose room.

In January 2024, a virtual Booklovers Club was established. The group meets once a month on the third Saturday at 11:00am. For more information, email programs@pwywca.org.

And remember, What Happens in Booklovers, Stays in Booklovers!

Our Mission

The history of Phyllis Wheatley Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Inc., (CFC# 31203 and DCOne 9207) is a long and exciting one. It is the story of African-American women with a vision to start a YWCA for “Colored” women and girls in the early years of the twentieth century when such a deed was impractical and required great courage.
